INTERVIEW WITH GRANDPARENTS

1.
What are the differences between the today's melas and the meals in the past?
There weren't too many kinds of meals in the past. We used to eat same meals nearly everyday. People didn't have enough money to buy whatever they wanted. Today we can eat different kinds of meals, fruit and vegetables. Children are so lucky today.

2. What kind of games did you use to play in your childhood?
Untill the end of secondary school, I lived in a village. We didn't have any bicycle, playgrounds and parks where we could play, etc. You don't know but we used to play a game which was played with a ball ans a stick, was called celik-comak in Turkish. We used to play hide and seek in the evenings at street too.

3. Are there any differences in the clothes?
In our childhood, there were some effects of Ottoman Empire. We wore traditional clothes such as shalwar, fez, sandal, etc. We didn't have too many clothes so we had to wear them so long time. We didn't have enough money to buy whatever we wanted. Today children have lots of modern clothes. When their clothes are a bit old-fashioned, the immediately buy the new ones. It was luxury for us.

4. In your childhood, what did you use to do at nights?
In those days, there was no electricty at home. We used oil lamp or kindling wood for lightening. We used to have dinner early. At nights our relatives or neigbours came and we used to play funny games and have fun together. Now because of the tecnology, we have given up old but good habits such as having fun with the family members by playing games and chatting. It effects our daily life badly.

5. How were the schools in the past?
In those days, there was only one class and one teacher. There were 15- 20 students who were differents levels in the same class. There weren't enough class equipments. There was a stove to heat the class.

6. What would you like to say about technology?
As I mentioned before, there are some disadvantages of technolgy. But in spite of these disadvantages, there are lots of advantages of technolgy. There weren't any computers bofore so we had to do all things by ourselves. I took too much time. There were some difficulties about transportation to go to school or somewhere. Today there are great improvements with technology.

7. What did you use to do during the festivals?
As I mentioned before there were only one class with 15-20 students. That's why the festivals'displays were so simple and short. But now you can prepare great displays and celebrate the festivals better.

8. What are the differences between the Aksaray's today and past?
We moved from Aksaray in 1989 naerly 20 years ago. In those days, Aksaray's population was 40 000 but now it is 130 000. There are lots of changes such as opening new schools, university, big buildings etc.

9. What are the differences between the family structure in the past and now?
There are lots of differences. In the past, families didn't give importance to be educated. But now they support their children to go to university and have a good job. In those days fathers were dominated to take decisions about the family but now families give impartance to ideas of all family members.
